LEGAZPI CITY — Two towns in Sorsogon suspended classes on Wednesday, Jan. 8, while other towns authorized schools to implement localized suspensions, as heavy rains persist due to the shear line.

In Castilla town, Mayor Isagani Mendoza ordered the cancellation of classes at all levels, citing the “continuous rains” affecting the area. The advisory, however, did not specify whether it covers both public and private schools.

A similar suspension of classes was also declared in Magallanes on the town’s official Facebook page on Wednesday.

In Juban town, at least 20 elementary schools and four secondary schools, all of which are public schools, implemented suspensions, as town officials authorized school heads to call off classes in anticipation of the potential flooding and flash floods.

Meanwhile, 14 elementary schools and three secondary schools, also all public schools, in Casiguran town shifted to modular learning due to the heavy rains.

In Sorsogon City, Mayor Ma. Ester Hamor said the cancellation of in-person classes in all schools in the provincial capital would depend on the discretion of school heads.

In an earlier announcement, the city disaster risk reduction and management office advised schools to adopt asynchronous classes.

In Pilar town, Mayor Carolyn Sy-Reyes also authorized school heads in the town to decide on whether or not they would pursue face-to-face classes.

In Gubat town, Mayor Ronnel Lim also directed schools in flood-prone villages to suspend classes when necessary.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) Southern Luzon on Wednesday raised a yellow rainfall warning in Sorsogon and Camarines Sur, indicating the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

An orange rainfall warning was placed over Albay and Catanduanes provinces, threatening flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
